We find it endlessly fascinating to understand where our food plants fit in the evolutionary history of all plants and to study the evolutionary relationships among them.  Putting our food plants into a broad botanical context provides scientific as well as culinary insight into the characteristics of the relatively small number of plant species that make their way onto the modern table.  We have generated a list of the most common plant species found in a modern American grocery store.  Here we organize this list of food plant species according to their placement on the plant tree of life, our best understanding (as of September 2012) of the relationships among plant species. We have taxonomically organized this list both as an outline and using phylogenetic trees. Use these two perspectives complementarily.
